Village Booklets for Family History

The ‘Village Booklets’, written and compiled by Roy Montgomery, are an excellent resource on ancient rural parishes of Hampshire. Every booklet is a succinct historical guide, capturing those things most important to the family historian, using a wide range of source material uniquely drawn for each village.

The aim of the booklets is to help researchers develop their own knowledge through further investigation of the sources used, including the extensive holdings at the Hampshire Record Office and Hampshire libraries and the HGS Research Centre.

Each booklet covers items such as a brief history, the church and non-conformists, schools, pubs and inns, as well as a plethora of surnames relating to the featured village.

  • Perfect for field research, each booklet captures the essential history of the village, with references to schools, churches, and public houses. There are also cross references to records held in the Hampshire Record Office.
  • Surnames and occupations of village residents, extracted from directories, are particularly useful. Discover who was the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker when your ancestors lived there.
  • Each booklet is illustrated with a schematic map of the parish, a recent photo of the church, and sometimes an older photo of the church or village.
  • A resource unique to the HGS, over 100 Hampshire villages are currently represented with more ito come.
