Steventon appeared in the Doomsday Book as Stivtune, with later versions including Stiveton in 1200 and more commonly in the 17th Century as Stephenton. The name is derived from Old English and possibly refers to a farm clearing.

One claim to fame for Steventon is that JANE AUSTEN was born there in 1775. She spent her formative years here and it is where she wrote her first two novels, Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey.
