Booking for the HGS Annual Conference Day

Don’t miss the opportunity to hear three great talks, network with friends and new acquaintances and browse our bookstall at the

HGS Annual Conference Day on Saturday 18th June 2022

Our Annual Conference will be held at The Macdonald Botley Park Hotel, Winchester Road, Boorley Green, Southampton, SO32 2UA from 9.30 am to 4.00 pm.

Open to members and non-members, the ticket cost is just £15 per person.

We would like to emphasise that the hotel will be taking all precautions regarding Covid-19 and masks and hand sanitiser will be available.

The event will be introduced by our President, Nick Barratt, who is well know for his connection with “Who Do You Think You Are?” and his work with the Open University.

The first talk will be given by Jane Harris, Customer and Archive Manager, HRO, and Paula Crompton, Strategic Manager Collections, HCC, who will be explaining how Hampshire Record Office has developed, where it is now and what will be its future direction.

Following a two-course buffet lunch, hot and cold options, Michael Gandy will be talking about “Name Lists of the 17th and 18th Centuries”.   He will explain that, like us, our ancestors were repeatedly taxed and often asked to register for some level of military service but, unlike us, they were often asked to assert their loyalty either to church or state. This talk will run through a whole range of sources, some covering all males, some covering all householders, including women, and some covering everybody except the very poor.

After a break for afternoon tea, Nick Saunders will be speaking about “How to Research Individuals Through Military Records”. Nick will discuss how to research WW1 and WW2 relatives. In his talk he will show how to make sense of the material available on Ancestry and Find My Past and how to use war diaries and other primary sources.  He will also cover the use of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, contemporary newspaper reports, and regimental archives and museums.
