The subject of seafaring ancestors can feel as wide as the oceans themselves. Whether you have spied "Mariner" in a baptism register or fished out a Merchant Navy headband from a box during a house clearance, Lucy plans to set your sails in the right direction to find out more.

Lorraine Whale. Genealogist now based in Hampshire after living in Surrey for 25 years.
Like many others, my passion for family history started with my own family and soon a fascinating hobby developed into my own business – Time Flies Ancestry.
I studied with the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies and successfully completed the Higher Certificate in Genealogy in 2020. As an Associate of AGRA, you can hear me talking about House Histories and Legal and Chancery records on a couple of the ‘Ask AGRA Podcasts’.
I love talking about the different sources you can use for family history research, from newspapers through to manorial records. By using these sources I’ve been able to trace a family of Brewers back to the 16th century and discovered how an Italian waiter took on the British press in a case of slander and won. Fascinating stuff indeed!
The story behind the newspaper headline from 135 years ago!
