National Archives Immigration Records Online

The National Archives immigration records of thousands of 19th century migrants are available to search and download online.

Seven thousand people applied for British citizenship under the 1844 Naturalization Act. This 2013 release of documents from the National Archives includes, among others, their records covering the period 1801 to 1871.

The records include testimonials made to the Home Office. These can include details of the applicant’s age, occupation, length of residence and address.

People came from all over the world, including many from Europe. The Industrial Revolution and expanding British Empire offered many job opportunities to migrant workers hoping to find work in Britain.

Many were driven from their own countries by political unrest. They settled in British cities and created their own communities.

You can search the National Archives using an individual name or the country of origin.
